Harold Corston

Harold Corston (1889-1945)

Another player remembered by Billy Bennington was Harold Walter Corston from Wymondham. Harold was born in Suton, a village on the edge of Wymondham, in 1889, the son of a farm worker. Harold initially followed his father into farm work. He fought in the First World War and by 1921 was working as a night watchman and porter by day at the Briton Brush Company. Here he might well have met Elijah or Cecil Ely, who played and made dulcimers and also worked in the same factory. HaroldĀ  later went into the greengrocery trade and moved to a new semi-detached house on Vimy Ridge, named after a battle near Arras in northern France. Nothing is known about his instrument or his playing.
